How to Rejuvenate a ‘Battered and Bruised’ Immune System
Many people today like to say that our immune systems simply aren’t as strong as those possessed by our ancestors.
This isn’t really true, of course, but there is an issue with our immune systems when compared to the ones people who lived generations ago had.
That issue is that our immune systems are “dysregulated.” What does that mean? Dysregulated is a medical term for biological processes or functions that aren’t working optimally or “the way they should.”
You see, several factors have combined to make our immune systems less efficient than they could – and should – be. Those factors include:
All three of these conditions weaken our immune system and make us more susceptible to the flu, to the Coronavirus and to various cold strains.
So what can we do to strengthen our immune systems in time for winter? We’ll reveal the answer in just a minute but first let’s take a closer look at our immune system and its importance to our health.
A properly functioning immune system keeps your body healthy by protecting it from disease, and by fighting disease when you become sick.
Your tonsils, appendix, stomach, adenoids, lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, bone marrow, and Peyer’s patches are all part of your immune system.
This complex system of organs, proteins, cells, and tissues functions together to identify and kill pathogens and tumor cells. It also detects a wide variety of foreign intruders, from viruses to parasitic worms, and has the ability to distinguish them from your body’s own healthy cells and tissues.
This is no easy task, because invading pathogens can evolve rapidly, producing adaptations that avoid the immune system and allow disease and infection to spread throughout your body.
To survive this challenge, the human immune system also adapts over time to recognize specific pathogens more efficiently. This adaptive process is known as “adaptive immunity” or “acquired immunity.”
In should be pointed out here that the purpose of a vaccine is to simulate early exposure to a particular disease, so that your immune system can begin manufacturing antibodies.
Many vaccines are actually made from a tiny amount of the disease in “killed” form (or similar, but less virulent strain). Notice in the above explanation that it is your immune system that ultimately attacks and defeats the virus.
The simple truth is “Your first and last [and best] defense against disease is a strong immune system.”
In fact, vaccines can often be unnecessary if you have a properly functioning immune system, because a strong immune system will begin manufacturing antibodies on first exposure to a virus.
Many doctors believe that a properly administered vaccine can help to facilitate this process, but there is no clinical evidence to support this claim.
Among people who have died from a particular virus, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) does not provide separate data to differentiate between those who received a vaccine and those who did not.
The immune system protects you in three different ways:
The immune system also has several other important jobs. For example, your immune system can detect cancer in early stages and eliminate it in many cases.
So now that we understand the immune system better, it’s time to find out what we can do to strengthen it.
The answer to this lies in three simple letters … CBD!
CBD has been shown to be immune-modulating (study, Russo S. op. cit.), which means it plays an integral role in keeping the immune system functioning properly instead of over or under-reacting to threats.
As we mentioned, autoimmune diseases are characterized by an immune system that overreacts and starts attacking healthy cells in the body. CBD may be able to help prevent this or reduce the effects.
CBD also helps reduce inflammation in the body, which weakens the immune system. One more thing, CBD has also been shown to relieve stress and anxiety which can also weaken the immune system.
For example, in the study “Cannabidiol as a Potential Treatment for Anxiety Disorders” scientists found that “Evidence from human studies strongly supports the potential for CBD as a treatment for anxiety disorders … CBD reduces experimentally induced anxiety in healthy controls, without affecting baseline anxiety levels, and reduces anxiety in patients with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).”
