Your Dog on CBD – Could This Cannabis Extract Make Your Dog Calmer & Happier?

As CBD, or Cannabidiol, has gained popularity among humans, more and more pet owners have been wondering if the powerful chemical compound may also have benefits for their dogs.

And, while it is still early, preliminary research shows that the pet owners were right in asking this question. But before we get into the potential benefits of CBD for dogs, let’s explain what CBD is for those who are new to this subject.

What is CBD?

As we said earlier, CBD stands for Cannabidiol, which is a chemical compound found in the cannabis plant. There are two types of cannabis plants – marijuana and hemp.

Most CBD today is taken from the hemp plant as it is low in THC, which is the psychoactive compound found in marijuana that gives users a “high.”

Thanks to its minimal levels of THC, hemp is legal pretty much everywhere while marijuana is notoriously not legal in most countries.

When ingested by humans, CBD has been shown to have a number of health benefits, including:

So Does CBD Have Similar Benefits for Dogs?

With increased interest in giving CBD to dogs, scientists have begun conducting more studies in this area.

Most are still in the preliminary stages, though, so there are not a lot of results to go by.

One study conducted in 2018 and published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science found that CBD oil increased comfort and activity in the home environment for dogs with osteoarthritis.

According to the researchers, 80 percent of the dogs in the study saw a significant decrease in pain and also improved mobility.

Beyond studies, however, word of mouth about the benefits of CBD is growing rapidly.

Many pet owners report that CBD has helped their dogs with a myriad of conditions.

For example, many pet owners with anxious dogs say CBD has helped them calm down significantly.

For example, Todd from London says his dog has benefited mightily from a steady dose of CBD.

“I have a little Yorkshire Terrier and he is extremely high strung. He barks at every little noise and gets extremely stressed when strangers are present. It was very hard to deal with and we were literally at our wit’s end when a friend suggested we try CBD.

At that point we were willing to try anything so we bought a bottle of CBD oil from Sarah’s Blessing in London and the results were almost immediate.

Chipper (the dog’s name) calmed down significantly. He’s so much better behaved now. He’s no longer this whirling dervish who can’t be controlled and is always stressed and making noise. Now he is much calmer.”

In addition to treating anxiety in dogs, pet owners say CBD has shown other benefits as well.

Charles says CBD has dramatically reduced the number and intensity of the seizures his dog, Barkley, has due to his epilepsy.

Clarice says she bought CBD for her dog, Sandy, when the dog developed terminal cancer and she believes CBD greatly reduced her pain and extended her life by several months.

The bottom line is for many pet owners who have been searching for solutions to help their sick or anxious dogs, CBD seems to hold real promise.

One of the big benefits of CBD is that it does not pose a threat of overdose because it is not psychoactive or toxic. In fact, most of the pet owners we spoke to praised CBD for being better tolerated than many prescription medications that they had tried in the past.

Should You Give CBD to Your Pet Dog?

In the end, only you can make that decision. If you do decide to give your dog CBD, please keep the following in mind:

Use a CBD product that contains 0.3% or less of THC. As we mentioned earlier, THC is a psychoactive compound and most vets frown on giving dogs THC. A big reason for this is that improper dosing can cause toxicity in dogs.

Also, please be careful who you buy your CBD from. Many current suppliers of CBD do not have any quality control. This leads to wildly varying concentrations of CBD in their products, including some products that contain NO CBD AT ALL!

More tips for buying CBD include: research companies online and being sure to read their testimonials. If a company doesn’t list the ingredients in its CBD products and provide online reviews from users then it probably isn’t the safest choice.

Also, it is best to choose a CBD product that is organic and pesticide free.

If you searching for a reputable provider of CBD for your pet dog, one company that we have already mentioned in this article that has a sterling reputation is Sarah’s Blessing.

This company is widely referred to as the highest quality CBD brand in the EU. It currently offers three types of CBD Oil – a 3% CBD Oil for mild conditions, a 6% CBD Oil for moderate conditions and a 9% CBD Oil for chronic conditions.

The company’s CBD is of premium quality and derived from Cannabis sativa through a supercritical CO2 extraction process. Not only does the CO2 extraction improve the quality of the CBD, it also preserves a full spectrum of other cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, nutrients and antioxidants. All products contain less than 0.3% THC

One note: when purchasing CBD it is better to get full-spectrum CBD instead of CBD isolate. This is because full-spectrum CBD contains all the cannabinoids from the cannabis plant and these cannabinoids have been shown to produce greater health benefits together than when one cannabinoid, like CBD, is isolated. This is commonly referred to as “the entourage effect” and by taking advantage of it you can provide even greater health benefits to your pet.
