CBD Linked to New Health Benefit – Weight Loss!

In an animal study, entitled “Cannabidiol decreases body weight gain in rats: involvement of CB2 receptors” 5 researchers observed that rats who were injected with CBD daily at doses of 1.1 and 2.3 mg per pound of body weight (2.5 and 5 mg per kg) saw significant reductions in body weight, with those receiving the higher dose having the most pronounced results.

Meanwhile, a study entitled “Obesity and cannabis use: results from 2 representative national surveys” 6 found that even though marijuana use is associated with increased food intake users actually tend to weigh less than those who don’t use marijuana.

In the study of 50,000 people, researchers noted an obesity rate of 14–17% among those who used marijuana at least 3 days per week, compared to 22–25% for those reporting no marijuana use in the past 12 months.

So What Exactly is CBD & How Can it Help You Lose Weight?

As we mentioned earlier, CBD stands for Cannabidiol and it is one of many cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, which includes both marijuana and hemp.

In marijuana, CBD is actually the second most abundant cannabinoid trailing only tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) which is the psychoactive compound that gives marijuana users their “high.”

In hemp, the order is reversed and CBD is the most abundant cannabinoid and THC is kept at levels of .3% or below – that’s why hemp does not deliver a “high.”

Well, research into the matter is still in the early stages but scientists at this point believe that CBD interacts with the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the lymphoid tissue and the brain.

These receptors are thought to be involved in both our metabolism and food intake. Here’s how Medical News Today explains the process:

“The body has a built-in endocannabinoid system. This system responds to different compounds in the body through two cannabinoid (CB) receptors, called the CB1 and CB2 receptors.

Usually, CB1 receptors exist mainly in the brain and central nervous system and are almost nonexistent in the rest of the body. CB2 receptors, on the other hand, exist throughout the body.

In people with obesity, however, CB1 receptors become more widespread, especially in fatty tissue. Because of this, researchers believe that there may be a link between the activation of the CB1 receptors and obesity.

CBD does not activate the CB receptors directly, instead influencing the body's natural cannabinoids to either block off or activate the receptors. This may play a role in weight loss or other critical metabolic functions.”

In other words, by interacting with the receptors CBD offers a two-pronged benefit – it speeds up metabolism so that we burn more calories and it also acts to suppress the appetite so that we consume less calories.

Scientists also think that CBD may “brown” fat cells. This is important because there are two types of fat cells – white and brown.

White fat cells are the bad fat cells, which when accumulated in excess are associated with the development of serious health conditions like heart disease and diabetes.

Brown fat cells, on the other hand, are associated with generating heat by burning calories. In a study entitled “Can Brown Fat Win the Battle Against White Fat?” 7 researchers found that individuals with a healthy weight tended to have more brown fat cells than those people who were overweight.

While more studies will obviously have to be done it certainly looks like CBD may have another benefit to add to its list.
